Learning from Brad free essay sample

What do you do when you are at the supermarket doing your weekly shopping and you encounter someone with special needs? Do you stare at them uncomfortably, turn around and walk the other way, or talk to them? I used to do everything in my power to avoid eye contact, afraid that I might upset them or hurt their feelings. My fear, as with many people, came from lack of education about developmental disabilities. My hands-on education began with Brad. At the age of thirteen, I started volunteering at Camp Sunshine, a recreational camp for children and adults with special needs. Brad, a fifteen year-old boy with a form of muscular dystrophy, was the camper I was assigned to that first summer. His disability affected his muscle tone, so he had a slight limp and was very small for his age. What he lacked in size he made up for in imagination. We will write a custom essay sample on Learning from Brad or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Each day, he would put on a production of the Wizard of Oz, complete with morning casting sessions, lunchtime intermission, and end of the day bows. Despite having a disability, he was one of the happiest people I had ever met. I thoroughly enjoyed that first summer at Camp Sunshine, and I wished it would never end. Imagine my surprise and excitement when I walked into the lunch room on the first day of high school and saw Brad sitting at a table eating his customary peanut butter and ketchup sandwich. Brad was a member of the self-contained Transitions class in which I was a classroom assistant during my free period. When I was helping in the class I would work one-on-one with him to help him with his assignments. We would work on reading, writing, and grammar skills. The best part about assisting him in school was the smile and unique compliment he would give me each day. When I walked in, I would hear, â€Å"You look very beautiful today Danielle,† or â€Å"You are such a nice girl, Danielle.† Those compliments were simple and easy to say, but meant more to me than Brad will ever know. My experiences with Brad provided me with a newfound appreciation and respect for people with disabilities and led me to choose to pursue a career in Occupational Therapy. I eagerly and enthusiastically look forward to one day being able to help individuals like Brad overcome the physical limitations that they deal with on a daily basis. My goal is to provide therapy that will encourage and support these individuals as they gain independence and learn to accomplish tasks that would otherwise be beyond their capabilities. Camp Sunshine has uniquely qualified me for this profession by enhancing my patience, understanding and compassion for others. I have learned that there is nothing to be scared of and no reason to judge because people with disabilities are some of the most lovable, intelligent, and big-hearted individuals one will ever meet.

Reflection of Nursing Career free essay sample

As I complete my first two weeks of class, I am learning how important an educational focus is towards advancing my career. After our assigned readings I realize that a nursing education has a very significant impact on career advancement and professionalism. A nursing career offers many choices for practitioners and demands accountable and competent practice. Nurses are key members of the healthcare team, striving to provide excellent care to individuals, families and groups of all populations. Competent and safe nursing practice is reliant on a nurse’s dedication to lifelong learning and professional development, as well as commitment to quality and organizational policies and procedures. A nurse’s role goes above and beyond that of a care and includes a responsibility towards patients, families and co-workers. The work of Bowden (2003), exemplifies the complexity and depth of the nurse’s role in, Enhancing our Nursing Practice through Critical Reflection. This article pays tribute to the art of reflective practice, where quality of nursing practice is the focus. We will write a custom essay sample on Reflection of Nursing Career or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The broad range of responsibilities placed upon today’s nurse demands that critical thinking is developed through purposeful reflection where the goal is to strive for excellence in practice (Bowden, 2003, p. 29-31) After taking a look at what a nursing career means to me I am able to relate what nurses complete each day to a provision in The Code of Ethics. I feel my personal career is in line with and parallels the American Nurses Association’s The Code of Ethics. As I read each provision of The Code of Ethics I am able to reflect on my practice and correlate each provision to the care we as nurses complete each day. Provision 1 is based on providing excellent patient care to all patients regardless of race, socioeconomic status or personal values. Provision two affirms that our primary responsibility is to our patients and their families. The third provision speaks to the responsibility of health promotion, wellness and advocacy. This is observed in my daily practice as I oversee the care we provide to our patients and families and ensure the adherence to policies and procedures to protect them. The fourth provision addresses accountability And responsibility for our practice. Through practices such as critical reflection and adhering to policies and procedures nurses are able to improve the quality of care they deliver. The fifth through seventh provision define the need for maintaining personal growth and development, continuing education and environmental improvement. Nurses complete this every day by maintaining competencies and quality improvement processes. The eighth provision refers to collaborating with all members of the health care team. Finally the ninth provision is about values and integrity, principles I carry with me each day of my practice (American Nurses Association, 2001, p. 1-14). After correlating each provision of The Code of Ethics to the care I provide and oversee each day, I can determine several motivating factors to remain in my current profession. It is rewarding to me to see the positive impact I make on patient care, including helping patients and families develop and meet their goals. I am pleased to have the respect of the medical staff and to be involved during times of clinical decision making. I have also found that being a role model for my colleagues is a satisfying experience. I want to continue in my current position and hope to make further career advancements as I complete my Bachelors of Science in Nursing. I strive to improve the care I provide and the job I do each day. I have developed three short term and three long term goals for myself. Short Term Goals: 1. I will join the American Nurses Association within one month. I have learned of many benefits they provide for registered nurses and the multitude of information available for members on their website. I will begin implementing a formal form of Gibbs Reflective Cycle with staff in the next week. I hope to facilitate staff develop critical thinking skills and critical reflection to improve the quality of care they deliver (Bowden, 2003, p. 30). 3. I will complete my first course to my Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree successfully. Long Term Goals: 1. I would like to complete my BSN within two years and enroll in a Masters’ degree program. I am looking into education or health care management and organizational leadership. 2. I would like to become certified in critical care as I have a substantial background in this area. I would like to complete this within one year. 3. My final goal is to become a manager of a critical care unit. I would like to improve staff development and employee retention. I feel obtaining my BSN will impact many of my goals in a positive way. I realize I am only at the beginning of the program but as I begin reading and researching articles for our forums and papers, I am learning about the importance of continuing education for career advancement. I feel I have for many years utilized an informal form of critical reflection and look forward to supporting staff towards utilizing a formal and reflective process aimed at improving their own practice. Obtaining my BSN is an essential in my career advancement goal. I work in a small community hospital and with the new reimbursement plan from the Health Care Reform, it has been predicted by our institutional leaders that a consolidation of services with a larger magnet institution is likely. I believe my broad range of skills, including my experience in medical-surgical nursing, telemetry, critical care and some telephonic case management of the Medicaid population as well as my current experience as a clinical supervisor places me in an excellent position to continue my practice; however I understand the necessity of obtaining a BSN degree. In closing most of my goals directly correlate with obtaining my BSN. My short term goals are a result of new knowledge I have gained from this class or involve successfully completely the class and moving forward towards my degree. My long term goals involve completing my degree and enrolling in a Masters’ program so I may meet my optimal goal and career of managing an intensive care unit. I feel I have many clinical strengths and focusing on continuing education will benefit me in my future. The nursing profession is continually changing and becoming more complex. I feel in the near future a bachelors’ degree will be the preferred entry into nursing practice.

Small Company Y2K Report essays

Small Company Y2K Report essays 3. Hardware and Software Compliance It is a problem resulting from the common programming practice of using only two-digits to store the year in software. The practice dates back to the 1950's when computers began to be used for business purposes. Using two digits for dates is benign and causes no harm so long as the next year is a larger number than the current year. For example software applications that use dates have no problem with the sequence of 95,96,97,98 and 99. However, when the century ends, the year 2000 will be stored as 00. Calculations or decisions, based on dates or time periods, can go seriously wrong. Inregard to personal and small business computers, the problem is three fold. Firstly, the computer hardware must report the current date correctly. Many computers, especially early Pentiums, 486, 386 and 286 based machines, will on the 1st January 2000 Revert back to 1 April 1980 or some other date. Thus creating a potential problem until the correct date is re-entered - provided of course that the computer can be set manually to a date beyond 311299. Calculation of Leap Year dates may also be incorrect on some computers. Secondly, the computer software must carry out the correct calculations based on a four-digit year (e.g. 1999 or 2000 etc) rather than just using the last two digits. The supplier or manufacturer of the software should be approached to ascertain the compliance of their code, or their schedule to have it corrected and distributed. Thirdly, your data must be in the correct format - namely year described as a four-digit number. If your dates have been entered as described above (that is 15th Feb 1955 entered as 150255), then you have a data conversion to be carried out. To determine if Windows NT 4.0 ,Win95 and would roll to the appropriate date, the control panel applet "DATE&TIME"(d&t) was used to change the dates. The machines d&t were set to the day before each date outlined in the ...

Managerial Economics Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Managerial Economics - Research Paper Example The cost of production is dependent on the materials the firms choose. In this case the building materials are the materials for production. It is to be noted that the firm is earning short run profits which are the driver of new firms into the market. As new firms enter into the market, the demand for the materials for production will rise. The chosen firm will also have to buy the materials at higher costs and therefore, the costs of production will rise (United Nations Department of Agriculture, n.d.). b) The price that the chosen firm charges for their services will depend on two major factors: the competition that the firm faces from other competitors and the real estate market. As there is entry of new firms into the market, there is increased competition which will tend to force the equilibrium price down. Therefore, the chosen firm will be forced to charge less for the remodeling services. c) From the above two discussions it is clear that the firm will have to face increased competition and the costs of production will also increase. When new entrants appear in the market, the share of each of the other firms operating within the same industry decreases. As a result, the profits of the chosen firm will decrease. The firm will now enjoy only normal profits. Managerial Decisions for Firms with Market Power 2. ... How? What evidence might you bring to the hearing? Answer: The Federal Trade Commission is concerned that the merger increased the market power for the firms that merged. However, it is difficult to argue that the market power will not increase if it is assumed that the rivals are close to the size of the merged firms. But it can be argued that the merger was simply aimed to save costs. Suppose the individual firms had to incur some overhead costs while operating as individual units. If it can be argued that increasing market power was not the aim of the merger and if it can be proved that the overhead costs have really decreased while operating as a merged company, then it will provide a foothold in the argument. The concentration of market power will also help to derive the price elasticity of demand. It can also be argued that the market power will not increase as much as in a situation of monopoly and would lack the power to hurt the consumers. In an industry characterized by fir ms that enjoy similar market shares, it is unlikely that the market power will increase as a result of the merger. The search engine market power tremendously increased because of the deal between Microsoft and Yahoo. The deal was allowed as Google enjoyed a fair power of the market. If the deal would not have taken place, both companies would have began to lose market power which could have hurt the consumers. Strategic Decision Making in Oligopoly Market 3. When McDonald’s Corp reduced the price of its Big Mac by 75 percent if customers also purchased French fries and a soft drink, The Wall Street Journal reported that the company was hoping the novel promotion would revive its U.S. sales growth. It didn’t. Within two weeks sales had fallen. Using your knowledge of game theory,
